Henry Blueskin VP100 is a self-adhered air and water barrier membrane that goes on the sheathing before the siding. The simplest way to describe it is duct taping the whole house: it sticks to the sheathing and to itself, so air stops finding its way through every seam, corner and window opening.
The numbers are the part people do not believe. An older Chicago house can run up to roughly 15 air exchanges an hour, which means on the coldest day of the year with the wind up, you are heating outdoor air over and over. Blueskin brings that down to around two. That is where the energy savings actually come from, and it is why we specify it on new construction, additions and full re-side projects.
It is also a water barrier, so wind-driven rain that gets past the siding drains out instead of soaking the sheathing.
